The cryptography group at IST Austria works on theoretical and practical aspects of cryptography, the science of information security. In our group we develop new cryptographic primitives and protocols to address current and upcoming cryptographic challenges. Two current research topics are:
Sustainable Cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin is the first successful digital currency, its popularity comes from the fact that it is decentralised, which requires to constantly waste computational power. This ecologically and economically problematic. We work on more sustainable cryptocurrencies which use disk-space instead of computational power to achieve decentralization.
Crypto for light-weight devices. We work towards provably secure cryptographic schemes for light-weight devices such as RFID tags, which are too constrained to run existing cryptographic schemes.
